Smith tomb approximately 20 metres
south-east of Church of St Mary

GV II

Chest tomb to John Smith approx 20m south-east of east end of
church. c1844. Sandstone ashlar. Tuscan angle pilasters with
necking support slightly rounded top with rounded edges and
frame recessed side slabs. Inscription on south commemorates
John Smith of Middleham, `the highly esteemed training groom
of the late Lords Strathmore and Queensberry, the late Duke of
Cleveland and the present Earl Glasgow.' Died April 12th 1844,
aged 75.
