South aisle window with Early English Gothic Y tracery. The streak beneath the missing headstop to the hoodmould shows the path of erosion taken by the rainwater. The hoodmould is there to keep water off the window tracery, the thinnest and most vulnerable part of the structure. The headstop allows rainwater to drip off onto the ground. The streaked area is just below the place where the window arch starts. This area of masonry carries the weight diverted to it by the arch, as well as the weight of masonry directly above itself. So it is important to avoid erosion here, and therefore we have headstops. (Photo Aug 2008).
