Description

UPOTTERY
ST 20 NW
7/123 Furzy Cottage
-
- II
Cottage. Late C18-early C19, possibly an older core. Plastered local stone and
flint rubble (the east end is exposed) and maybe including some cob; stone rubble
stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing south-south-west, say south, and built down a
relatively steep hillslope. The room uphill at the right (east) end has a gable-end
stack; it was probably a parlour. The room at the left (west) end was probably a
kitchen and it has a rear lateral stack. The central room is now used as a kitchen
but it is unheated and was formerly a service room, probably a dairy or buttery.
There is an entrance hall and stair between the central and left rooms. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 3-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars, the first
floor ones with thatch eyebrows over. The front doorway is left of centre and it
contains a late C19 or C20 plank door and small C20 hood. The roof is hipped to
left and gable-ended to right and to rear it is carried down over the outshots.
Interior was not available for inspection at time of survey.
