Farmhouse. Late C15 - early C16 with C16 and C17 improvements and extensions;
modernised in C19 and 1983. Roughcast cob and volcanic stone; cob and volcanic
stone stacks topped with brick; concrete pantile roof replaced original thatch in
1983. Originally a 3-room and through passage plan with service room to west (left
of front). Upper end extended in late C16 and 4th room now cut off from main house
by C19 brick wall and stack (presumably a rebuild of former gable wall). Lower
(west) end rebuilt as forward-projecting cross-wing in mid-late C17 with massive
gable-end kitchen stack. Now 2-storeys throughout. Rear wall largely built of
stone and includes C16 lateral stack to hall which was made redundant when larger
stone lateral stack built on front (presumably in C17). C16 stair turret to rear
of inner room. 5-window front comprising uniform large 2- or 3-light, chamfered-
mullion windows, probably C19. Window left of stack preserves C19 glazing pattern.
Passage door left of stack with simple C20 concrete tiled roof porch. Opposing
rear door now blocked. 2 ground floor windows to extreme right are blocked, but 1
and both those opposite in rear wall retain late C16 2-light, oak mullioned window
frames (chamfered with step stops). Window openings of kitchen wing, inside face,
have ovolo-moulded lintels. Internally most early features are hidden, but roof of
main block carried on side-pegged jointed cruck trusses, smoke-blackened over hall.
C16 roof and framed partitions over inner room and east end. C17 roof to kitchen
wing. Kitchen and hall floored with C19 scroll-stopped beams. A typical, multi-
phase, Devon farmhouse.
