Pair of houses and attached railings. c1830-1840 with later
additions and alterations including C20 extension to rear of
No.4. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco front facade,
Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings.
Numbered from right to left, described from left to right.
Single classical design.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic and basement, 4 first-floor
windows, arranged 2:2. Outer bays project and are pedimented,
ground floor has horizontal rustication.
Entrances to outer ends have 2 roll-edged steps to 3-panel
doors, that to left part-glazed, both with overlights, that to
right with glazing-bars; fielded-panel reveals. Distyle Doric
porches, alike, have engaged pilasters and columns, frieze,
cornice, blocking course. Two 8/8 sashes, reveals have
horizontal rustication, sills, rusticated arches.
First floor cornice surmounted by Doric pilasters to
projections. Two 6/6 sashes, two 2/2 sashes all with plain
reveals, sills and tooled surrounds.
Basement: plank door to right, two 3/6 sashes with
margin-lights and in plain reveals. Frieze, dentil cornice
continues to pediment. Ridge and side stacks.
INTERIOR: dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and wreathed
handrail to each house.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: lancet area railings.
Forms a group with The Shakespeare Inn, No.8 Church Terrace
and No.2 George Street (qqv) and Nos 8, 10 and 12, George
Street (qv).
