Pair of semi-detached villas, now flats and house. Dated 1836
to centre. No.81 by William Thomas for himself. Pinkish-brown
brick with painted stucco facade and Welsh slate roof.
STYLE: Neo-Tudor.
EXTERIOR: main range of 3 storeys, 3 bays, with 2-storey,
single-bay range to left, basements. Quoins to angles. Main
range: central projection between canted bays which rise from
basements through ground and first floors, outer
single-storey, projecting porches.
First floor, from left range: sill band on lion corbels;
mullion and transom window in moulded reveals with quoined
surround; narrow 1/1 sash; canted bay has central 1/1 sash
with margin-lights between 1/1 sashes in plain reveals and
with quoined surround; mullion and transom window in tooled
reveals with quoined surround; bay has three 1/1 sashes in
plain reveals and with quoined surround. Bays surmounted by
pierced diaper pattern balustrade.
Second floor: 3 mullion and transom windows in tooled reveals
and with quoined surrounds.
Ground floor, main range: end entrances (alike): 2 roll-edged
steps to part-glazed, 3-panel door with 4-centred overlight
with margin-lights; within porch with moulded, 4-centred
opening; male caryatid pilasters support frieze with griffins
to left and masks to right, surmounted by finials.
Windows, from left: 1/1 sash with margin-lights in tooled
reveals with sill and quoins; bay has central 1/1 sash with
margin-lights between 1/1 sashes, in plain reveals and with
quoined surround; pair of 1/1 sashes in tooled reveals and
with quoined surround; bay has three 1/1 sashes.
Basement: bays have 1/1 sashes, otherwise casements.
Left range surmounted by cornice, frieze and cornice with
lozenge and pyramidal finials.
Main range: outer bays have curvilinear gable ends with tooled
surrounds surmounted by urns, gryphon and lion. Centre bay
surmounted by pierced parapet and date, with pyramidal
finials. Tall end and roof stacks with cornices.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms a group with Nos 83, 85 and 87 Holly Walk (Upper) (qqv).
