Uploader's Comments

This important building was built in 1668 by Provost Alexander Dunbar of Barmuckety and Westfield. He built it as almshouses and a hospital traditionally with stones from Cromwell's Fort. It possibly incorporates part of an earlier hospital. It has had various uses over the centuries, school, weighhouse, library, store for fire engine and a hospital again during the 1830's Cholera outbreaks. The armorial panel over the entrance is a replica the original now in the museum. At present it is used as a shop, day centre and flats
