Linlithgow Palace, Gate-House

A Category A Listed Building in Linlithgow, West Lothian

Uploader's Comments

The Palace is approached through an archway flanked by turrets with gunloops, which was built by James V around 1535 as a gateway to the palace and royal park. It stands near the site of a timber gatehouse built by the English King, Edward I, who encamped here on his way to fight the Scottish army led by William Wallace at the battle of Falkirk in 1298. The parapet and panels, bearing carved insignia of the Orders of Knighthood to which James V belonged (Garter, Thistle, Fleece, St Michael), are 19th-century copies of the originals.
