Public library. Dated 1904, with mid C20 alterations. By
Hemsoll & Patterson. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings
and gabled and hipped slate roofs. Tudor Revival style.
Plinth, low coped parapet and gables. Single storey plus
attics; 4 x 4 windows. Corner site with angled entrance bay.
Entrance bay has parapeted shouldered gable with ramped corner
buttresses. Central 3-light stone mullioned window with
inscribed panel above, flanked by round-arched panels with
oval cartouches. Below, a flat-roofed segmental portico with
curved stone steps, 6 Ionic columns and entablature. Splayed
entrance with recessed panelled double doors. On either side,
a 2-light stone mullioned window between the outer pairs of
columns.
Each return has in the centre two 3-light stone mullioned
cross casements with cornice. Beyond, towards the entrance, a
flat-roofed octagonal bay window with 3 stone mullioned cross
casements. At the outer end, a projecting shouldered gable
with a canted stone bay window with a stone mullioned cross
casement and transomed flanking lights.
INTERIOR has segmental arches and shaped wooden brackets to
the roof. Mid C20 bookcases.
