Balustraded wall, gate piers
and gates to King Edward's School

GV II

Wall, gatepiers and gates. c1760 alignment altered c1884, with C20 addition. Probably by Thomas Jelly, as the main building (qv).
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar with wrought iron. Six rusticated piers with three lengths of dwarf wall with four faced bulbous balusters and moulded coping. Balustrades wall C20 replacement for wrought iron railings. Two wrought iron gates with spear heads. Piers to main entrance have cornice caps and are topped by urns with acanthus decoration and Vitruvian scroll. Three of other piers have vases with foliate decoration and pine cone finial, one pine cone missing.
