4/257 Chippenham Lodge
II

Gate lodge to Lucknam Park(q.v.), c1840-50, ashlar with stone tiled
roof. 2-storey with attached archway and campanile tower in
Picturesque Italianate style. Archway moulded with heavy keystone
and panelled spandrels, heavy impost band over pedestrian archways
each side and short sections of cornice over spandrels with parapet
swept up over central arched head panel. Tower to right of 3
stages, lower two square with raised quoins and raised window
surrounds to north and south sides, square-headed to ground floor,
round-arched to second stage. Top stage is lantern turret, square
base swept back to narrower lantern with angles chamfered and pair
of round-arched lights to each face, bracketted eaves cornice and
plain tile low pyramid roof with weathervane. House to left with
side wall ashlar stack, gable ended to front with pedimental gable
and ball finial. Raised quoins, plinth and band, quoins terminated
below main pediment with cornice strips. Tripartite unmoulded
window to each floor with blank side panels and glazing bar sash
with margin lights to centre. Upper centre window is arched with
keystone. Door in west side wall entered from left pedestrian
archway, one window range to right. South end wall, facing Lucknam
Park, has pedimental gable and lower one-room range beyond also
with pedimental gable and raised corner piers. One S end window in
raised surround with bracketted sill. One west side round arched
window with moulded band at impost level. To left of house is
short stretch of coped ashlar block wall. One curved ramp down and
east end ashlar pier with corniced cap and ball finial.
