England's Schools History, Architecture and Adaptation by Harwood, Elain ( AUTHOR ) Jan-01-2010 Paperback
Elain Harwood
For most of us, school was our first detailed experience of a building outside the homes of our parents, friends and relations. Many people react emotionally when their old school, charged with so many memories, is closed or demolished. Not all school buildings are worthy of designation, but many are major local landmarks and demonstrate an important part of our society's evolution. This book aims to raise awareness of the wide range of school buildings built in England from the Reformation to the Millennium, and discusses which buildings may be worthy of greater appreciation and preservation. It summarises the development of schools and analyses how social attitudes have been expressed in their architecture and planning. Finally, it looks at the adaptation of older schools to modern needs and new uses for schools around the country, drawing on examples of best practice from Historic Building Inspectors and Advisers.
Harveys of Hayle: Engine-builders, Ship-wrights and Merchants of Cornwall
Edmund Vale
The first iron foundry in Cornwall was started in 1779 by an enterprising and versatile village blacksmith, John Harvey. His success encouraged him to enlarge his activities by acting as merchant to the mines, a venture which brought him into competition with powerful rivals who used every means to discourage and dislodge him, including physical violence. In 1803, John's last surviving son, Henry, was left heir to the foundry and the quarrel. Henry Harvey was one of the most striking figures thrown up by the Industrial Revolution. Far sighted, yet steady, exacting yet scrupulous and just, his character was the perfect foil for that of his brother-in-law, the mercurial mechanical genius, Richard Trevithick. The story closely follows the reaction of their sharply contrasted temperaments. The essential parts of Trevithick's first steam road-carriage, (1802) were made at John Harvey's foundry, thus conferring on Hayle the (doubtful) honour of being the birthplace of the automobile. Under Henry Harvey, the small foundry, on its once precarious foothold, expanded into a great engineering works which, by 1843, was engaged on building the largest steam engine in the world and had branched out into ship building and merchandising of many products. A whole new town was created and the firm of Harvey and Co continued as a major enterprise up till the time when the author ends his story in 1964.

[(Blackpool's Seaside Heritage)] [ By (author) Allan Brodie, By (author) Matthew Whitfield ] [March, 2014]
Allan Brodie
Blackpool is Britain's favourite seaside resort. Each year millions of visitors come to walk on its three piers, ride donkeys, enjoy shows at the Winter Gardens, scream on the thrilling rides at the Pleasure Beach and ride the lift to the top of the Tower. Generations of holidaymakers have stayed in its hotels, lodging houses and bed and breakfasts and all have succumbed to its delectable fish and chips. Two centuries of tourism has left behind a rich heritage, but Blackpool has also inherited a legacy of social and economic problems, as well as the need for comprehensive new sea defences to protect the heart of the town. In recent years this has led to the transformation of its seafront and to regeneration programmes to try to improve the town, for its visitors and residents. This book celebrates Blackpool's rich heritage and examines how its colourful past is playing a key part in guaranteeing that it has a bright future.

Charles Holden: Architect
Eitan Karol
This is a fantastic study of a major modern architect. Charles Holden (1875-1960) was the last of the arts and crafts and the first of the moderns. His buildings are famous, but he himself was a modest man who shunned publicity. He refused a knighthood because he believed architecture was team work. His early work includes hospitals, such as Bristol Royal Infirmary, and public buildings such as Bristol Central Reference Library and what is now Zimbabwe House in London. His middle work includes the famous London Underground stations and many of the Commonwealth War Graves in Europe, and his late work includes his crowning achievement, the great tower of Senate House, University of London, which dominates the Bloomsbury townscape. All these works were imbued with a philosophy, of public service and the desire to find the naked, unadorned elemental essence of building. This is the only book-length study of Holden and his architecture, which has been the life's work of the architect Eitan Karol. He has provided a highly readable account which places Holden in his artistic and ideological context, from his idealistic Whitmanesque days at Bolton in Lancashire, to the architect of post-war reconstruction and town planning in the London of the 1950s. The book includes designs which were never built as well as accounts of the evolutionary stages and struggles of those which were. The architectural historian Gavin Stamp has added a foreword and the book has no fewer than 335 black and white illustrations and 58 in colour, appendices of Holden's chronology and works and an utterly comprehensive index. The book won a prize! It was awarded the Alice Davies Hitchcock Medallion by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain, for being the best architecture book of 2007!
