Hotel. 1863-8. By WH Hawtin. Restored 1991. Limestone ashlar with ridge stacks and a slate hipped roof. Double-depth plan. Italianate style. Four storeys and attic; 11-window range. A heavily decorated symmetrical front, 3:1:3:1:3, has projecting wings with faceted pilaster strips, first- and third-floor sill bands, a dentil cornice over brackets, panelled pilasters to the attic and a bracketed moulded cornice to the balustrade, with faceted dies. Faceted rustication to the ground floor. A Venetian doorway has oval panelled jambs, acanthus capitals and keyed semicircular arches, to a revolving C20 door. Ground- and first-floor semicircular-arched windows: moulded architraves with large keys on ground floor flanking the door, and two-storey canted bays to the wings with attached Corinthian columns, segmental pediments to the wings and centre, plain pediments to the outer middle windows. Tripartite middle windows. Second-floor windows have raised surrounds and rounded corners with console cornices, third-floor windows with rounded corners, and semicircular-arched windows to the attic. Hipped dormers. Plate-glass sashes. The left return is a matching symmetrical three-window range.

INTERIOR: largely remodelled 1991; includes a Palm Court with glazed roof.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached balustrade to each side of 1991 steel canopy and steps.
