War Memorial. 1921. Red brick and flint with stone dressings, red tile roof, cross
of Portland stone, brick boundary walls with iron railings. It takes the form of
long rectangular shelter raised above and facing a terraced garden in 2 parts,
the upper rectangular with a cross in the centre, and the lower triangular. The
shelter is in C17 style, single-storey, 11 bays of open arcading, symmetrical; the
wider centre bay has a slightly projecting porch which has brick pilasters with
imposts, a basket-arch with brick voussoirs and keystone, flint spandrels and a
Dutch gable with a lettered stone tablet; the flanking arcades consist of round-
headed arches on brick piers with imposts, brick voussoirs with keystones, and
flint spandrels; the ends have basket arches with keystones; and the monopitched
roof has copings in Dutch gable style. Inside, the rear wall has a large inscribed
tablet in the centre, and all the other bays have round-headed blind windows
filled with stone tablets commemorating the fallen of the 1st World War
individually (an added tablet beneath that in the centre lists those of the 2nd
World War). A flight of steps leads down from the porch to a paved area of the
garden, in the centre of which is a tall chamfered cross with an inverted sword
on the face, and an octagonal base. The garden is surrounded by low walls with
stone copings, square brick piers and iron railings, and the principal gateway on
the west side has taller piers with ball finials.
