STROUDE ROAD
Memorial Stone for Site of Roman Road
II
Memorial stone. 1850. Stone monument about 7 feet in height. Rectangular shape with
moulded base and cornice and flat stone on top, set within railed enclosure. Inscription
on side facing road: "This stone marks the site of the Roman road proceeding from the under-
mentioned stations in the south and south west of England and Wales of which a portion still
remains in the adjoining eastern meadow, founded probably by the second legion of the
Roman army between the year seventy six and two hundred and ten of the Christian era." There
follows a list of place names followed by explanation "The above stations were taken from the
itneraries of Antoninus and Ricardus Corinensis and inserted on the stone by Edgell Wyatt
Edgell Esq. A.D. 1850." The final part of the inscription was rather illegible at the time
of survey but referred to alleged errors about Roman roads in histories of the Roman occupation of Britain.
