Country House now hospital. c1700 in English Baroque manner. Built in mixed red and
brown brick with red brick dressings to wings; rustic quoins and stone dressing to
centre. Hipped slate roof with off ridge chimneys. Main part 2 storeys with attic
and basement. 11 bays, central 5 in break with steep (and richly decorated) pediment,
containing enriched bullseye and ornament with heavy modillions. 2 dormers. Flush
framed glazing bar sashes throughout, 1st floor centre with flanking scrolls. Central
doorway up D plan flight of 7 steps with stone balustrade. Diagonally set corinthian
doorcase with swan neck pediment panel door. 3 bay wings with rubbed brick heads to
windows and moulded brick bands and modillion cornice broken forward over pilaster
strips. Single storey bay to left hand with blocked archway and ball finial to
parapet. To garden, salient feature is full height angled bay.
Interior: 2 storey hall with high panelling and rococo plasterwork above including
festoons, c1750. Panelled ceiling with central wreathed oval c1700. Gallery at the
rear with twisted balusters of the same date. Large late C19 fireplace with twisted
marble columns to deep mantelpiece. Open rectangular newel main staircase with
twisted balusters and volute and sway tread ends. Vitruvian scroll stucco band on
wall above. Boxed room with early C10 panelling, pedimented over doors and
neo-Jacobean panelled ceiling.
