Coal and wine tax post. c.1861, made by Henry Grissell. Metal. Approx 3½
foot high. Four-legged plinth with chamfered pier above having moulded capital
bank and pyramidal top. City of London Corporation shield cast on the front;
lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". Maker's name plate on
the rear. One of a series of coal and wine tax posts which indicated the
boundary at which duty was payable; the tax on coal dated back to the 1660s.
