GV II
Almshouse group. Red brick withsome red brick and some stone dressings. Plain
tiled roof, hipped over centre and end projections. Ridge stacks. Central and
end projections have stone plat bands. 1 storey with attics in projections, 1
storey in linking bays. Central entrance with iron-railed balcony over, and flanked
by a pair of casements. Arches with square-heads in links flanked by quasi-pilasters
in brink and pairs of casements, with entrances adjacent to outer sides of block. End
projections have single semi-dormers and entrances in outer bays. End walls with
staircases leading to porches and upper flats.
Whiteley village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
