DEBENHAM
LOW ROAD
Poplar Hall

II

House. Mid C17 with alterations of C18 and C19. Timber-framed; the north
entrance front encased in mid C19 red brick, the south side rough-cast. Half-
H plan with deeply recessed 2-window main range. Plaintiled roofs; both
cross-wings are hipped at north end. An axial C17 chimney of red brick has a
plinth with a complex series of moulded bands and sunk date panels on 2 faces.
Mainly C18 transomed casements; some renewed in C19 and mid C20. Early C18 6-
panelled entrance door, the lower panels fielded, the upper panels glazed.
Architrave with keystone and console brackets; the cornice was mutilated by
C19 brick encasement. Good mid C17 staircase with moulded handrails, newel
finials and turned balusters. One room has two C17 moulded plaster cartouches
in the ceiling. Much framing has been exposed in C20: a high incidence of
reused timber from C15 and C16 buildings, including a plain butt-purlin roof.
C18 remodelling includes some good internal joinery. Part of this building
lies in Winston C.P.
