Description

NETHER WHITACRE DOG LANE SP29SW (South-east side) 5/97 Church End Farmhouse and attached barn GV II Farwhouse, now divided into two dwellings, and attached barn. C17. Timber-framed with brick infill panels and some brick rebuilding; plain tile roofs; brick ridge stack and external end stack. L-shaped plan. Main 3-cell range of farmhouse aligned east-west facing south with south projecting cross-wing. The 2-bay barn lies to the south on the same alignment as the cross-wing, and is linked to it by a covered carriageway. North front: 2 storeys: 3 tiers of square panels to eaves level, and straight braces. Irregular fenestration: 2 C19/C20 casements to each storey. Gabled cross-wing to the right with stack in the centre. It is roughcast to the right of the stack but part of a queen strut roof truss is exposed to the left. The right hand return of the wing is roughcast: 2 storeys; 2 windows: C20 casements. Early C19 6-panel door to the right with reeded and pedimented wooden surround,. There is another entrance on the south front. To the right of the wing is the carriageway and barn; the side walls of the latter has been rebuilt in brick but the north wall retains square panel framing. Barn doors to the right; pitching hatch to the centre. Interior: the house has a wide fireplace in the central room with ovolo-moulded bressumer and stone jambs, the right hand one having a wide stopped chamfer. Chamfered and stopped spine beans and exposed queen strut roof trusses. The barn also has queen strut roof trusses and straight wind braces.
