TL 67 SE MILDENHALL WAMIL

8/87 Entrance gateway 15 metres - north of Wamil Hall, with attached flanking walls which return towards Wamil Hall

Gateway, late C16. Probably for Sir Henry Warner (d.1617). About 3 m. wide and 4m. high; flanking brick walls built or rebuilt C18 and altered C20. Dressed limestone facade to north face of gateway, with backing piers of gault and orange brick. Moulded arched gateway with moulded pilasters and entablature; the cornice and pilaster capitals enriched with egg-and-dart ornament. Within the pediment is a central achievement, well-carved, probably of Sir Henry Warner. On either side of the pediment are surmounting stone balls. The original oak door, counterboarded with multiple nailing, has a wicket door, and is complete with strap hinges and sliding bolts. On either side are brick flanking walls about 2.5m. high, rebuilt in part C20, but retaining moulded stone copings and ball finials at the piers. After about 7 metres, the walling returns towards Wamil Hall, broken by a later gateway on the east side, but forming originally an inner court against the north side of Wamil Hall.
