Pair of houses in row. c1790, by James Hamilton (RCHME).
Flemish bond brickwork, at the third floor with flared
headers, slate roof. Of identical detail, but with straight
joint between the two.
Each 4 storeys and basement, 3 windows; plain sashes to wide
plain stone lintels plus keystone, to sill band at third
floor, stone sills second floor, and balcony on brackets, with
wrought-iron balustrade (No.86 only) at first floor; at this
level the deep windows run down to floor level. No.86 has an
original 6-panel door in an arched opening with plain
fanlight, and fluted architrave; No.87 has a late C20 shop
front with deep fascia, and the balcony has been removed.
Steps to basement area to No.86 are enclosed by spearhead
railings. Central and end brick stacks.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
These houses were built as an annexe to Gloucester Lodge (qv),
for use when the Royal Family was in residence. The top floor
was added later.
