EXTERIOR: the building’s principal elevation faces the market square and is covered in painted stucco with flanking pilasters topped with the facemask of a lion. It is three storeys high under a pitched roof.

There are five sash windows at the first and second floor levels, with glazing bars remaining at the second floor windows. On the ground floor is a window on the left with entrances on each side. The doors are wooden with door cases including corbels and fanlights. The left door is panelled, and the central door is glazed. To the right is a shop front with fluted Doric pilasters, panelled stallriser, glazing with mullions, a central entrance with double doors, and entablature.

Numbers 23 to 27 Market Place (consecutive) form a group.

History

North Walsham is a medieval market town that grew wealthy from the trade of wool and cloth. The town was largely rebuilt following a fire in 1600 but remained a significant market centre into the Industrial Revolution.

Numbers 23 and 24 Market Place likely date from the C18 and were built as a single phase of construction, though they have undergone several periods of alteration since that time. In the mid-C19 they were occupied by a grocer, tea dealer and tallow chandler. The projecting Doric shopfront was added in the mid-C19. The building has changed use through the later C20 and early C21, and number 24 underwent internal and external changes in 2017 to sub-divide ground floor shop.
