Cottage homes for children. 1903 by Leeson for the Newcastle Board of Guardians. Later Police Headquarters and college.
Cavity walls in stretcher-bond brick, partly pebbledashed and painted. Welsh slate roofs. Two pairs of semi-detached houses in Domestic Revival style. Consciously asymmetrical.
Former Block 9-10: Two storeys, six bays. Doorway to No. 9 has cornice over; No. 10 has semicircular hood. No. 9 has a canted bay window; No, 10 a bay window. Two- and three-light windows in moulded wood surrounds. Cross gables over first and third bays; bay four has gabled half-dormer; bays five and six under one large cross gable. Hipped roof with three brick-corniced stacks.
Former Block 11-12: Nine bays. Doorways with semicircular hoods on brackets; No. 11 has a large bay window over; No. 12 has a round-headed window. Centre two bays have tripartite windows in moulded wood surrounds; semicircular pediments over first floor windows. To left, three bays with 12-pane sashes and first floor dentilled string. To right canted bay window. Over centre bays two Flemish gables. Roof hipped on left with octagonal lateral shaft; gabled on right with end stack.
A good example of buildings for the enlightened approach to child care in the early C20.
