House. Mid Cl7, altered c.1800 and extended late C19. Coursed squared marlstone
with ashlar dressings; Stonesfield-slate roof with stone-and-brick stacks.
L-plan. 2 storeys plus attic. 3-window principal front, facing garden, has a
chamfered plinth, and breaks forward in the middle and right bays which have
4-pane C19 sashes above canted bay windows; the projecting section has a plain
parapet, with corner ball finials, forming a balcony reached from a dormer
containing a French window with Gothick glazing bars. Plinth returns around
gable walls: to left containing a small doorway with a C17 stop-chamfered
lintel; to right with stone splay-mullioned windows to ground, first and second
floors of 3, 3 and 2 lights, all with labels and leaded glazing, plus a 2-light
mullioned cellar window. Returning from it, the rear wing has C18 leaded
casements of 4 and 3 lights, converted from mullioned windows of which the
labels remain; at the junction of ranges is a small blocked doorway in a
Tudor-arched chamfered stone surround. Rear of main range has 3 further
splay-mullioned windows; double-gabled rear wall of wing has 4 more, some
serving the stair. All gables have parapets and projecting moulded kneelers,
some with ball-finials; main roof retains the stone bases of 3 stacks. C19 porch
in angle of ranges has an arched doorway; above it in the rear wing is a leaded
cross window. Single-storey kitchen extension at rear of wing has a 2-light
leaded casement with transoms top and bottom, possibly re-used; smaller brick
service range is dated 1876. Rainwater goods include two C18 moulded lead hopper
heads and several C19 cast-iron heads ornamented with a lion rampant. Interior:
stop-chamfered beams; 2 Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplaces, one with recessed
spandrels; large open fireplace with cambered bressumer; timber-framed
partitions; old plank exterior door with fleur-de-lys hinges (now re-set); 3
stop-chamfered door frames in attic, plus an old moulded plank door; butt-purlin
roof; c.1800 oak stair with stick balusters and ramped headrail; C19 pump and
stone sink.
