SOUTH LEIGH CHURCH END SP30NE 7/235 Church Farmhouse 12/09/55 - II

Shown on Ordnance Survey map as Church End Farmhouse. House, now farmhouse. Early C16, with later alterations. Timber-framed on limestone rubble plinth; of close studding with middle rail, and jettied gable ends with arch-bracing and tension-bracing; rendered right side wall has herringbone timber framing to gable. Gabled stone slate roof; ridge stack of stone finished in C17 and C18 brick; right end stack finished in C20 brick. 3-unit through-passage plan. 2 storeys and attic; 4-window range. C16 ribbed plank door with iron fittings set in chamfered arched surround; blocked door with arched head in left bay. C20 two-light casements; mid C19 horizontal sliding sash above blocked 5-light wood-mullioned window right of door; gabled roof dormers with 3-light casements. Rear: late C19 outshut adjoins early C16 jettied porch; doorway with moulded architrave; hollow-chamfered wood-mullioned 4-light window to side; C16 ribbed plank inner door with iron fittings set in moulded arched architrave with sunk spandrels. One-storey right-angle service range to right of front much altered in C20. Interior: moulded beams on ground floor, except stop-chamfered beam to right. Part of panelled screens passage, with heavy moulded muntins and rail, to left of entry. Moulded stone jambs to fireplace in central room. Jowled posts to 8-bay collar-truss roof with butt purlins and some arched windbraces. Stop-chamfered lintel to possible former oriel, with orange-ochre banding, in bay to rear wall. Ground and first-floor rooms to left have late C17 panelling and cornices. An early example of a two-storey house: the painted beam is a rare survival, similar to those at Yelford Manor (q.v.).
