4/44 The Square
II
Former farmhouse subdivided into different dwellings. C16 and C17. Timber
frame, part rendered, part refaced with brick and part apparent. Returned
brick and flint gable-ends and pantiled roofs. L plan. Single storey
with attic to C17 south wing, 2 storeys to re-faced Cl6 east wing. Irregular
fenestration mainly C20 with some surviving 2 and 3-light casements with
leaded lights. Simple planked doors. 4 sloping dormers to south wing.
Original blocked window openings in south gable-end. Steep-pitched roofs
and 3 axial stacks. East wing originally an open-hall with an C18 inserted
floor. Contemporary adjoining wall to west of south wing of brick and
flint with a fragmentary moulded brick coping. One brick jamb and a date-
stone, possibly in situ, with raised figures: 1674. A. Carter, "Excavations
