House. Early C16 core with later additions and much restoration and alteration
in the C19. Built of coursed rubblestone, stone dressings, some stone quoining
and gabled stone tiled roofs with moulded stone stacks. Original house set on
an E/W axis at right angles to the road with projecting wings to the N and S and
further additions to the W forming an irregular T-shaped plan. The garden facade
to the S has a further projection which may have been a 2 storey entrance porch
with room above. Two storeys and part attic. The roadside E facade comprises
the gable end of the original house and the flanking 2-storey one-bay wings.
On the ground floor in the S bay is a round-arched 3-light mullioned window with
hollowed spandrels under a flat head with a square label. This is similar in
style to the fenestration of the Guildhall and is of c1520. Above this is a C19
3-light ogee mullioned window. The attic window beneath the central gable is
an original 3-light chamfered mullioned window recut in the C19 and below this
on the 2nd floor is a surviving hood mould to another mullioned window which has
been lengthened and completely refenestrated. The remaining fenestration is C20
leaded glazing. There are several original late C16 2 and 3-light mullioned
windows on the S front including a wood mullioned window to the SE attic and on
the W front at ground level is an earlier double chamfered mullioned window.
A small deeply splayed round headed window set in the N front which lights the
staircase is probably a Perpendicular window, a hollow spandrel of which is just
discernable on the W jamb. Inside the first floor room on the SW of the original
house has 2 walls of late C16 oak panelling on a squared pattern with a gouged
frieze.
