13/105 Witts Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Late C17 and early C18, altered c.1800. Coursed squared limestone
with some ashlar dressings and wooden lintels; concrete plain-tile roof with
ashlar-and-brick gable stacks. Central-stair plan with added parallel range to
rear. 2 storeys plus attic on a semi-basement. Symmetrical 3-window front, with
16-pane sashes in the outer bays and a 12-pane sash above the central doorway,
was altered c.1800 from a 5-window front and retains blocked narrow windows to
both floors, stone-mullioned cellar windows, and a moulded string which returns
around the end walls. Steep-pitched roof has 2 gabled roof dormers, and each
stack has a plinth with a moulded cap and 2 renewed diagonal brick shafts. Rear
range is shorter and has 3 large transomed 3-light casements at each floor,
mostly with renewed frames. Interior: C17 dogleg stair rising to attic with
barleytwist balusters and a moulded handrail; vaulted cellars with 2 chamfered
stone doorways.
