Cottage. Early C17 incorporating parts of an earlier building; later additions
and alterations. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; straw thatch roof. Earliest
part is to left comprising single-cell cottage, extended to right by one room in
late C17 and twice subsequently, including late C20. One storey and attic.
Original part has infilled doorway to left with small leaded casement inserted,
leaded casement with wood lintel to centre and infilled doorway to right; former
integral end stack (now ridge stack) at junction with late C17 addition to
right. This has raking eaves dormer with leaded casement directly above C20
stable door and red brick ridge stack (former end stack) at junction with next
extension to right. This has infilled doorway with small casement inserted to
far left. C20 extension in matching style to right is not of special
architectural interest. Rear has leaded casements and infilled doorway with wood
lintel to right. Interior. Left ground-floor room has chamfered spine beam with
stepped ogee stops cut into earlier cross beam which supports upper cruck truss
(see below). Inglenook fireplace with chamfered wood lintel and bread oven to
left. Room to right (late C17) has chamfered spine beam with run-out stops and
plain joists. Large inglenook fireplace (right stack) with chamfered wood
lintel, bread oven to left and salt cupboard to right. Exposed joists in room to
right again. Semi-winder staircase in late C17 addition. Upper cruck truss with
slot for collar visible in attic. Chamfered single-purlin roof with original
thatching spars. Different roof pitch to each part but of sane type.
