GV II

Inn, now shop and public house. Mid- to late C16 with considerable
later additions and alterations. Timber framed (rendered to front)
with cross-wing re-built in brick with planted timber frame to
gable, slate roof with machine tiles to cross-wing. L-plan with hall
range (fronting street) of 2½ framed bays and totally re-built gabled
cross-wing to left extended to rear. 2 storeys; framing: exposed to
rear first-floor wall of hall range, square panels with short straight
tension braces and painted brick infill; passageway between No. 38
and Butcher's Arms has richly moulded beam with run-out stops; hall
range has one glazing bar sash above late C20 shop front, late C20
casement over passage; late C20 three-light latticed fixed-light window
to ground floor of gable with contemporary casement above. Long low
rendered range at right-angles to rear of No. 38 is not of special
architectural interest.
