BOMERE HEATH C.P. ROSEHILL SJ 41 NE 6/103 Nos. 1-6 (consec.) - - II

Row of cottages. Mid-to late C18. Red brick with plain tile roofs, hipped over pavilions. Palladian composition consisting of central 2-bay 2-storey range with flanking one-bay 3-storey pavilions, in turn flanked by 3-bay one-storey ranges with one-bay 2-storey terminal pavilions. Central block: dentil brick eaves cornice, and integral brick lateral stack at rear, and slightly projecting pavilions, each with plat band between first floor and attic, dentil brick eaves cornice, and integral brick lateral stacks. Segmental-headed wooden cross windows, except central first-floor pair with straight heads (replaced on ground-floor by C20 casement in second bay from left). Lunettes in attics of pavilions. Segmental-headed boarded doors in end bays with flanking segmental-headed side lights and later gabled porches. Flanking wings, each with dentil brick eaves cornice and central brick ridge stack. 2-window fronts; 2-light wooden casements, C18 or C19 cross-windows in left-hand block and C20 windows in right-hand block. Central segmental-headed doors, that in left-hand block boarded with gabled porch and that in right-hand block glazed. End pavilions, each with dentil brick eaves cornice and central brick ridge stack. First floor wooden cross windows and ground-floor segmental-headed half-glazed doors with segmental-headed side lights. Left-hand end pavilion has one-storey block to left with segmental-headed wooden cross windows to front and side. Lean- to at rear of right-hand link block and later parallel range with 2 external lateral brick stacks at rear of left-hand link block. The reason for the formal design of these cottages is not clear, although they have have been intended to be seen as an eyecatcher from Berwick House (q.v.) nearby.
