HARPSDEN HUNT'S GREEN

6/192 Barn and attached
stable approximately
10 m to south-east of
Hunt's Farm Cottage
GV II
Barn and attached shelter shed, now stable. Barn, C17 or earlier, repaired and
clad C18; shelter shed late C19. Barn timber framed on brick plinth, originally
with wattle and daub infill, later clad in weatherboard; corrugated iron roof.
Shelter shed timber framed with weatherboard cladding; plain tile roof. Barn of
5 bays with central opposing cart entries, doors removed from west (yard) elevation;
hipped roof. Shelter shed of 2 bays projects from right bay; gable front has
C20 stable door, hipped roof; left side originally open, with wooden posts on
chamfered padstones arch-braced to wall plate, C20 horizontal board infill and
stable doors. Interior of barn: wall posts have swollen jowels, straight braces to
wall plates and tie beams, some removed and some iron-bolted replacements; roof
trusses have curved braces below principal rafters supporting collars; 2 tiers of
clasped purlins; split log rafters; square-section ridge-piece carried on apex
collars. Wall framing has mid rail; close-set studs apparently replacing former
wattle and daub infill (the evidence for which is the holes in soffits of plates and
rails and grooves in top of rails and sole plate which formerly would have held the
staves for the wattle and daub panels). A barn appears on this site on J Blagrave's
1586 map of the Manor of Harding (see Henley on Thames Archaeological and
Historical Group, Vernacular Buildings Research Section, Report No 44/1986).
