Large isolated Gothic building on a hill set back from the street. By W B Moffat,
1855-58. Perpendicular style. South front. Central feature is gabled entrance
range coming forward from a cross range at rear with gables rising above crenellated
parapets and 3 turrets to each side. White lias with Ham stone dressings. Slate
roofs. Mostly 2 storeys with attics in turrets and gables. Buttresses, crenellated
parapets and 1, 2, and 3 light windows with traceried heads. Entrance front has
a projecting oriel with openwork parapets supported by archway and surround of
main entrance. Attached shafts leading to brackets under balconette flank the
heavily moulded segmental entrance arch. Heraldic devide and parchment scrolls
over the massive double doors. Oculus with stellar tracery in gable, subsidiary
wing in similar style to left.
