Large-scale group of Gothic school buildings. Main buildings by C E Giles 1867-9.
New chapel 1898-1903 by W E Tower. Symmetrical front with central tower rising
above roof level: flanking ranges to left and right. Main block is 3 storeys.
Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. Hipped slate roof with gables over windows
to left and right. Stringcourses and impost bands. Central tower has elaborate
crocket cornice and French chateaux style slate roof with picturesque openwork
bell-turret. Recessed pointed panel to front of tower roof. The tower has a 3-light
ashlar bay rising through both storeys over entrance. 6 windows of 3 lights each
to 2nd floor under relieving arches in gables. Ground and lst floor windows of
2 lights, with pointed dripmoulds over lst floor. All windows have cusped lights
and stone mullions and transoms. Very large entrance porch flanked by square turrets
with niches, one carved figure survives to left. Archway of 3 orders with foliage
soffits and nook shafts. Double doors and truneau. Buttressed range with plate
tracery, fleche on slate roof, elaborate niche at apex of gable, and heraldic devices
in oculi runs forward to left of main front. Adjoining triple gabled house in
Tudor style with stone mullioned windows is attached to right.
King's College, walls and gate piers form a group.
