A row of 12 shop premises, with living accommodation above, built in the early C19. with a good set of undamaged shop fronts. The majority have had single-storey wings built, extending into their former rear yards or gardens.
EXTERIOR: the front to Bath Place has shop fronts at ground floor level. These have panelled pilasters with fluted sides and half-glazed doors to one side and a shop window of 5 x 3 panes above a solid stallriser. Extending across the front of each is a wooden entablature, of which the frieze is formed by a transom light, divided into octagonal panes. Above this at first floor level is a sash window of 12 panes and there is a blind, sunken panel to the attic and a cornice to the top of the wall. The central properties, Nos. 6 & 7 vary from this pattern and have three round arches at ground floor level, the central arch containing a sash window, with a semi glazed door to its right and a passage entry at left. The rear has attic dormer windows with casement lights and a flat roofs. At ground floor level several properties have a projecting wing with a gabled or flat roof built over the former back yard or garden.
The terrace of shops with accommodation above dates from the early-C19. The majority of the properties have had single-storey wings added to the rear of the property in the later-C19 or C20, to extend the shop space over the area of a former rear yard or garden.
Nos. 1-12, Bath Place, Taunton are designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural: the building combines 12 individual shop premises behind one unified and impressive frontage.
* Intactness: although some parts of the timber shop fronts have been replaced, these losses are minor within the context of a row of early-C19 shops with matched shop fronts.
* Rarity: a row of shop premises of this date which retain a substantial part of their original condition is a distinct rarity.
