8/17 Milestone at NGR ST 2144 1318

Milestone. Circa 1782, reset on new stone probably C19. Cast iron
and unidentified stone. Pointed head to stone, rectangular plaque
with segmental corners, raised surround and inscription in raised
letters "MILES TO TAUNTON 8 HONITON 9'. The section of road from
Hunters Lodge, Churchinford to the Devon boundary was turnpiked in
1792 by the Honiton Trust. (Bentley, J.B and Murless, J.B Somerset
Roads- The Legacy of the Turnpikes, 1985).
