Farmhouse. Late C16, mid C20 front wall refaced, rear wall north-west rebuilt, rear wall
north-east removed and entrance cut through former bacon curing chamber east gable end,
outshots rebuilt and extended, stair in turret replaced. Roughcast over rubble with brick
facing to south front reinforced by full height buttresses, double Roman tiled roof, stone
stacks right gable end and to left of cross passage. Plan: 2-cell and cross passage with
coeval stair turret flanked by outshots. Two storeys, 3 bays, early C20 2-light many paned
casements first floor, ground floor 2 inserted C20 bay windows, right one with double Roman
tiled roof extended left to fore porch to C20 door, 2-light window right and small glazed
opening end right, Interior: former kitchen to right of cross passage, bressumer beam to
large fireplace, right remains of corn drying or malting kiln, blocked square headed opening
in gable end wall, rebuilt ventilation opening on facade right, ledge encompassing remaining
circular bay with one surviving large nail set higher up, this supported slat slabs pierced
with circular ventilation holes, remains of which survive in the farmyard at time
of survey (June 1985). Two oven openings, left one lined with flat bedded stone, in
re-entrant angle of wall left at ground floor level blocked segmental headed opening.
Four-centred arch doorframe to stair turret that originally opened out of kitcnen; similar
doorhead to cross passage, evidence of plank and muntin screen, part of which survives in
outbuilding, parlour chamfered leafs with step and runout stops including wall plate,
rear wall said to have been a timber framed partition first floor framed partition to
central jointed cruck truss, 2 other pairs visible set in from gable end walls with through
purlins. A very interesting farmhouse disguised by a C20 facade (VAG Report, unpublished
SPO, February 1973; Proceedings, SANHS, vol 116, 1972).
