Farmhouse now 2 dwellings. Probably C16, enlarged one bay south-east and again to south
probably in C18, late C18-early C19 north agricultural range added, enlarged south front
and mainly refenestrated mid-late C20. Roughcast with exposed rubble ground floor of
south-east wing, slate roofs, hipped on wings, large brick stack rising end bay
right at end of original dwelling, and centre of south east wing, lateral stack at rear
of hall said to have been removed. Irregular U-plan: probably 3-cell and cross passage,
latter removed and stair inserted, agricultural range added to north, now domestic, and
2 rooms to south-east added, extension at rear and south. Two storeys, 2:3:1 bays;
all late C19-early C20 casements with some late C20 windows, left wing lit only in right
hand bay, two windows below,one bay re-entrant angle, entrance centre of main block,
open pedimented ashlar doorcase, fanlight and 6-panel door,long re-entrant angle to
north wing with one window gable end said to have blocked slit opening to right of
window.Right return of north winq has tripartite 12-pane sash window, otherwise late C20
casements. Interior not seen, said to contain 9-panel compartment ceiling, steeply
chamfered beams in hall (Hele Mill House), with remains of panel ceilingin inner room
beyond, east wall of this room removed and pillar inserted, kitchen end (Hele Manor)
said to contain large fireplace with bread oven and probable site of stairs. The manor
of Hele is mentioned in the Doomsday book but subsequent documentation is laCking.
