School and school master's house. Circa 1855, by Butterfield
(J.Newman, Buildings of England Series, West Kent and the Weald,
1980). Small blocks of coursed stone with ashlar dressings.
Plain tile roof. L-plan, with house to left and school projecting
to front to right. House: 1½ storeys. Left half of front
elevation breaks forward slightly with roof pitch unchanged, but
is rebated back again towards left end except under eaves, where
it is supported on 2 moulded stone corbels. Broad stone stack to
rear towards left end, parallel to ridge, capped with vertically-
set stones of ragged outline. Similar, shouldered stack to right
gable end. Irregular fenestration of 2 windows; narrow wooden 6-
light frieze window under eaves to left end of right half, and
stone through dormer towards right end, with stud-work in gable
containing 2 narrow adjacent 8-light glazing-bar sashes separated
by wooden mullion. Two ground-floor windows; one to left section
of two 12-pane glazing-bar sashes separated by chamfered stone
mullion, and similar window to right with 8-pane sashes. Central
boarded door. Stone porch slightly overlapping left section with
wavy bargeboards and studwork to gable; no outer door, but 2-
centred arched wooden architrave with solid spandrels. Rear lean-
to and 2 short rear wings. School: linked to house by short single-
storey section with 2-centred arched boarded door. School single-
storey but taller than link. 2 slightly projecting stacks to long
right side. Two 6-light and one 4-light stone mullioned and
transomed windows to left side, with shouldered heads to upper
lights. Traceried window to gable end. Central 2-centred arched
boarded door to left side. Interiors not inspected.
