TQ 3080 NW and NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER TAVISTOCK STREET, 'WC2 72/ 35 ; 73/25 (south side) 15.1.73 No.22 (Charles H Fox Ltd and Robert White and Sons) and No 28 (Harper & Row Ltd) (formerly listed as No's 26 and 28) GV II Corner block of offices. c1857 by G F Fry as the offices of the Strand District Board of Works whose survey or was Fry. Stucco, slate roof. Italianate style. 3 storeys and cellars. 4 windows wide with single window bowed corner and 2-window return to Burleigh Street. Rusticated ground floor with corner entrance approached by flight of steps (No 28) consisting of an archivolt arched doorway flanked by engaged columns carrying entablature with enriched panel above inscribed with the Strand Board's title. Entrance to No 26 to left with archivolt arched doorway with console bracketed pediment and key mask. Altered ground floor windows with mask keystones. Triplicate 1st floor windows with cornices and semicircular arched 2nd floor windows with fruit-enriched pendants to consoles carrying pediments over them,and enriched aprons; the south bay of Burleigh Street return has windows of Venetian type. Both floors are articulated by pilaster orders, Ionic over Doric; the crowning entablature with blocking course. Prominent corner site. Survey of London; Vol XXXVI
