Terraced town houses. c.1780, associated with the Duke of Manchester's
development of the adjacent Manchester Square on Portman Estate land, the
street forming the western approach to the square. Brown brick with
rusticated stucco ground floors; slate roofs mostly concealed. Nos. 14 and
16 of 3 storeys with dormered mansards, Nos. 15 and 18 of 4 storeys and
No. 17 of 5 storeys, all with basements. 3 window fronts, except Nos. 14
and 18 with 5 windows and the latter with 3-window return to Manchester
Square. Semicircular arched doorways to left on Nos. 15 to 17 and centred
to Nos. 14 and 18, approached by short flights of steps over areas;
panelled doors and fanlights; No. 14 with architrave surround and
pilastered reveals, cornice over; No. 15 recessed for one order; No. 16
with side lights and patterned fanlight; No. 17 recessed for one order with
vermiculated keystone; No. 18 with architrave half pilasters and cornice.
Recessed sashes, some with glazing bars under flat gauged arches. Plat
band finishing off ground stucco work, No. 18 with plat bands to upper
floors and cornice over 2nd floor; parapets with stone or stucco copings.
Original, cast iron, geometric patterned balconies to 1st floor (except for
No. 15). Cast iron area railings with urn finials. The interior of No. 17
retains original delicate plasterwork to main front rooms, geometrical
staircase with slender turned balusters etc
