Detached town mansion. 1901 by Romaine-Walker and Besant for the Duke
of Marlborough. Portland ashlar dacing, slate roof. A boldly detailed
free classical design with Baroque and Beaux Arts details. 4 storeys,
basement and dormered mansard. 5 windows wide. Deeply channelled ground
floor with corniced architrave doorway to left balanced by similarly
framed window to right and in between segmental arched windows with
mask keystones; massive console brackets on outer bays support 1st floor
stone balustrade. Ionic columns flanking end bays, with pilasters
between, articulate 1st and 2nd floors, with architrave framed
segmental arched windows, and support dentilled entablature with broken
segmental pediments over end bays. Mask keystones with flanking swags
to centre and end windows of attic storey. Stone balustrade to roof
with mid C20 dormers. Similar giant order to side elevations.
Interior altered for office use mid C20 and the fenestration of metal
casements brought forward in reveals and mezzanine inserted.
