1/173 No 4 (Life-boat Lodge)

GV II

House. C1830-40, heightened by 1 storey in later C19 yellow brick, the 2 lower
storeys Flemish bond, the top floor stretcher bond. Slate roof with ridge tiles and
central brick chimney stack. 3 storeys and semi-basement; 2:4:3 windows. 2nd floor
has 2 cambered sashes without glazing bars. 1st floor has 3 cambered late
C19 sashes in earlier openings with rubbed brick voussoirs. 8-pane sash to right.
Cast iron balcony and supports and hood similar to No 3. Ground floor has 3 sashes
in moulded architraves without glazing bars but with ribbed brick voussoirs. Traces
of an earlier round-headed doorcase but slightly later round-headed doorcase to
right, possibly re-using 6 panelled early C19 door. Steps to street with iron
handrail. Rear elevation of flint with yellow brick lacing courses to 2 lower
floors. 2nd floor has 4 cambered sashes with verticals. 1st floor has 4 early
C19 12-pane windows and ground floor has similar and a 4 panelled door with marginal
glazing.
