almshouses in Ladywood. To the street a symmetrical composition of central
matron's lodge and flanking walls linking with gable ends of 2 wings stretching
back south to form close. Doorways in flanking wall either side of matron's
lodge. The latter is of 2 storeys and attic with ogee shaped gable. Gabled
ends of wings richly decorated with tripartite panels containing inscription,
surmounted by chimney stacks. Matron's lodge has 3-light mullioned window
with drip mould, to ground floor. Moulded capping to flanking screen walls
carried over gable ends of wings as stringcourse. Within the close, the wings
present 3 bay elevations to the central lawn with the south closed by a pair
with centre break. Each 3 bay elevation contains 3 almshouse units. Two storeys
red brick. Tiled roofs with eaves cornice; cresting tiled and stepped chimney
stacks on ridges. Two light small toned casement windows. Entrances to internal
porches have 4-centred arches with drip moulds. The close elevation of the
matron's lodge has a 2 storey canted bay with small parted casement lights
and 3-light attic casement with drip mould surmounted by shaped gable.
