Almshouses. Nos. 1-5 '1893': 6-8 '1901' (dates and name on front bays)
by William Huckvale for Rothschild estate, as almshouses. Timber framed
front on chamfered red brick sill, with roughcast red brick infill to
exposed frame. Red brick rear wall. Steep machine made red tile roofs.
Tall red brick pilastered chimneys. A near symmetrical long, 2-storeys,
E plan block facing S. S front has 3 projecting gabled jettied wings
with 2-storeys jettied and gabled rectangular bay windows and 3-light
leaded mullioned casements. In wider RH part the set back is jettied
with 2 minor and one central major gabled 2-storeys jettied similar
rectangular bay window, hipped porches in the angles to boarded doors
and gabled open timber porch to left of central major bay. In narrower
LH part the set back has 2 similar bay windows with gabled porch between
and hipped porches in the angles. Convincing timber frame with curved
braces in projecting part. Balustraded gallery to E end.
