Late C18 small country house. Stucco, Neoclassical style, L plan. Low pitched
Welsh slated roof with cornice, pediments to road and garden fronts with semi-circular
windows in tympana. 2 storeys and attics, entrance front. 2 storey semi-circular
bow on right, 3:3 sash windows with glazing bars in reveals. Ground floor pair
of 3 light windows under segmental panels flanking recessed porch with Greek
Doric columns beneath frieze cornice and segmental panel. 2 fold 6-panelled
door with metal grilles to marginal lights. 2 storey 5 window separate dwelling
at right angles was former back wing. Garden front trellis verandah, now glazed.
Interior contains good original details: friezes and cornices, staircase, north
ground floor room elliptical niche, fluted Roman Ionic pilasters, 2 medallion
plaques. Home of the third Earl of Marchmont (1708-94), statesman, friend of
Pope and Bolingbroke.
No 57 (Marchmont House), Little Marchmont, Outbuilding (former stables) and Gate Piers
form a group.
