5/60 Cowhouse and shelter shed,
Callow Farm
GV II
Cowhouse, shelter shed and store. Store C17, much altered C19,
rest third quarter Cl9 for Beauchamp Estate. Brick walls, brick-
nogged timber framing to part of store; tiled roofs. L plan,
single storey, main ranges 9 bay, with 3-bay lofted return on end.
Cowhouse range, right return boarded door to feeding passage at
rear, shuttered window centre, both cambered brick arches, 1861
datestone centre. To yard, brick return on right, 3-bay front,
timber posts at ends and to bays, curved braces to wall plate:
later infilled centre post and boarded doors to within 600mm of
eaves. To left 2 brick-walled bays, centre boarded door, cambered
brick arch. Further 3-bay cowhouse left, and single-bay brick
front with door, both as before. To left 7-bay open-fronted shed
for loose cattle, posts and braces as first cowhouse, left open.
To left at end 2-bay brick-walled box and passage across building
with door to rear. Return part timber-framed, end brick:
external stairs to loft. Internally, both ranges king-post
trusses with iron bolts, one-pair purlins, plank ridge. Boarded
doors from central feed preparation room to front of cowhouses both
sides, openings to feeding passage rear. Left cowhouse part of
brick trough and paving survive, with additionally iron water
trough and pipe in loose box at end. Corner room door to feeding
passage, front of open shed and double doors to rear: for roots.
Internal buttresses at bay divisions in shelter shed: latter
slightly later than cowhouse in date. Forms group with house and
barn (q.v.), completing yard enclosure with latter.
