Dated 1886 (with 2 lamp standards flanking front door). Surviving fragment of the
Croydon Union Workhouse, listed for tall tower. Stock brick; channelled lower stage
with wide round-headed doorway and stone plaque bearing date and defaced inscription
over. Middle stage having angle pilasters with recessed centre panels; front
elevation with tall round headed window and occulus over, other sides with occulus
only. Top stage with cast iron balcony, 2 round headed windows to each side in a
square recessed panel. Pyramidal slated roof with wide eaves on brackets. To
right of tower 3 bays of original ground floor survive; to left, 2 bays survive to a
height of 3 storeys. Two contemporary fluted castion lamp standards at front door.
