Description

BODENHAM CP off A 417 (west side)
SO 55 SW
5/10 Outbuilding about one
yard south-west of
Englands Gate Inn
GV II
Outbuilding, possibly once a malt-house. C17, re-erected circa 1830 with
mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill on tall sandstone
rubble base with machine-tiled roof. Three framed bays aligned north/south.
Two levels and cellar Framing: three rows of square panels from sill to
wall-plate, collar and tie-beam trusses with four struts at gable ends. There
is a continuous row of eight 2-light windows at ground floor level on the
west side and also a C20 cellar door. On the east side are two 2-light windows
at ground floor level, the main entrance door and a cellar door. Interior:
the roof is recorded to be of upper cruck type, typical of malt houses in
this area of the C19. The continuous row of windows on the west side may
replace ventilation louvres. A survey of 1828 records that the C17 frame
was to be rebuilt on top of the heightened sandstone base and the building
was then re-roofed. (RCHM Herefs II, p 16, item 35; Brian, Dr A: The Houses
[of the Township of Bodenham Devereux and their inhabitants in the C19 and earlier,]
unpublished notes).
